In Italian cuisine, wine has no purpose without food, and a grand meal cannot exist without either. That wonderful attitude of la cucina Italiana explains why Italian wines are a splendid choice for almost all holiday dinners and celebrations, whether the cuisine happens to be Italian, American, German , even Asian.

Spain Focuses On Wine Tourism

lciego, La Rioja Alta , SPAIN , December, 2006 - With the inauguration of the dramatic $100 million Marqués de Riscal's City of Wine in October, one of Spain 's wine regions, La Rioja, is transforming itself into a wine tourism destination. In the past two years, a wine museum has debuted, a Santiago Calatrava-designed winery has opened and a Zaha Hadid tasting room was inaugurated. Recognizing travelers' growing interest, the Spanish government is developing rutas del vino, wine routes that will lead visitors through vineyards to wineries, tasting rooms, restaurants and charming haciendas

German Wines

When you think of wine, you often think of the vineyards of France or Italy , but wine from Germany consists of many fine vintages. The Germany wine differs from its European brethren due to the difference in landscape and climate. The wine from Germany tends to be fruitier, but given the variable kinds of grapes and soils, there's no one style that can be attributed to Germany wine.

With over 500 vineyards in the immediate region, some actually in the city, wine enthusiasts will enjoy a stay in Stuttgart . Wines include Trollinger, Lemberger, Riesling and Kerner and you can go tasting within the city or out in the countryside at the small, cosy "Besenwirtschaften"(broom taverns)where vineries sell their own wines. People come from around the world for the first 10 days in September for the Stuttgart Wine Festival. Make sure you "partake of the grape" while you are here.

Wine Store in Stuttgart

The Australian wine industry is the 6th largest in the world, [1] exporting over 400,000,000 litres a year to a large international export market that includes "old world" wine-producing countries such as France, Italy and Germany.[2] There is also a significant domestic market for Australian wines, with Australians consuming over 400,000,000 litres of wine per year [3]. The wine industry is a significant contributor to the Australian economy through production, employment, export and tourism.

South America Wines

If you want sound wines at advantageous prices, Chile and Argentina are good places to find them. Although these two countries are regarded as relative newcomers to our retailers' shelves they have been producing wine for hundreds of years.

It is ironic that the South African wine industry, which at the time could hardly be described as progressive, proved to be one of the main beneficiaries of the advent of multi-racial democracy in 1994. Export markets opened up, and foreign investment came in, and it is remarkable how much progress has been made since then.

North America Wines

To many the wines of North America mean nothing more than California , but this is plainly a short-sighted view. Although it accounts for over 90% of the wine produced in the USA , there are a number of other states producing wine, most significantly north of California in Oregon and Washington , as well as some east of the Rockies . North of the border, Canada also produces some stunning wines.

Portuguese wine is part of the ancient traditions introduced to the region by ancient civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, and mostly the Romans. It started to export its wines to Rome during the Roman Empire . Modern exports developed with trade to England after a treaty in 1703.

Portugal has the oldest appellation system in the world, the Douro Valley .

French Wine

France is one of the oldest wine producing regions of Europe . Regions in the south were licensed by the Roman Empire to produce wines. St. Martin of Tours (316-397) was actively engaged in both spreading Christianity and planting vineyards. During the Middle Ages, monks maintained vineyards and, more important, wine making knowledge and skills during that often turbulent period. Monasteries had the resources, security, and motivation to produce a steady supply of wine for both celebrating mass and generating income. During this time the best vineyards were owned by the monasteries and their wine was considered to be superior. Over time the nobility acquired extensive vineyards. However, the French Revolution led to the confiscation of many of the vineyards owned by the Church and others

Enjoying wine is easier when you understand what a grape varietal is. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are different grape varietals, just like Granny Smith and Golden Delicious are different varieties of apples.

Enjoying wine is further simplified by knowing that wines are categorized by generic (or jug) wine and varietal wines. Varietal wines are further defined with terms like "Estate Grown" and "Appellation."  more info
